Matera’s 2019 Program as the European Capital of Culture

Matera’s series of events to celebrate it being named European Capital of Culture for 2019 will begin on January 19th.

Matera’s program of cultural events for 2019 was recently announced, beginning with an official inauguration featuring 54 musical bands.

The program features 48 weeks of events, with a dense schedule of about 300 events beginning on January 19th and officially ending on December 20th, 2019.

Matera’s European Capital of Culture program – supported by 12 sponsors – was presented by the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Alberto Bonisoli, who also announced that a “passport” costing €19 will be available that will allow visitors to attend a diverse array of events.

Staying true to the city’s original proposal when competing to be named European Capital of Culture, the program has five themes: roots and paths, continuity and breakage, remote future, utopias and dystopias, and reflections and connections.

While about 100 events have been included in the calendar to enhance “the extraordinary ecclesiastical heritage of Basilicata”, the program offers several additional events dedicated more specifically to Matera, including one dedicated to the ancient caves for which the city is well known. There will also be “broad appeal” events, such as a contemporary circus.

The final event on the schedule will be an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Matera’s history and modern culture.
