Siena’s Must-try Delicacies

Throughout Siena’s intricate network of narrow streets, you can enjoy the flavors of its gastronomical delicacies.

Siena is famous worldwide for its perfectly preserved medieval walls and fairytale-like city attractions, and the food is surely second to none! From a culinary point of view, Siena is indeed very rich and there are many red wines that are produced in its surrounding Tuscan countryside, including famous varieties such as Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano.

Siena’s Local Wines

Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano are all native to the Siena landscape and have the Sangiovese grape in common, although the grapes appear in the wines in different percentages, giving each a unique flavor.

The Chianti area is located to the north of Siena, enclosed between this small city and Florence. Meanwhile, Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano are produced in the southern province of Siena, in the areas surrounding the two villages of Montalcino and Montepulciano, as the names of the wines suggest. These three wines have all been awarded the DOCG label, a guarantee of quality and showing a controlled and guaranteed origin.

If you prefer a sweet dessert wine to red, you should not miss the chance to taste Siena’s Vin Santo, which is very popular among locals. The most “Tuscan” way to savor it is at the end of a meal, accompanied by dry biscuits called cantucci soaked in this delicious nectar, giving an extraordinary taste experience!

Siena’s Sweet Treats

Siena is also famous for its pastries, which are made to this day according to ancient and traditional recipes. The list of delights that you can experience on your Siena vacation is very long, but the most famous are the soft almond paste biscuits known as ricciarelli and the local fruit cake called panforte. Both are typically served during the Christmas season, but they can be found in the local stores at most times of the year.
