Palio dei Terzieri, Massa Marittima

Palio dei Terzieri, Massa Marittima

A Medieval Festival in the Heart of Tuscany (May)

Each May, the historic town of Massa Marittima comes alive with one of Tuscany’s most authentic and atmospheric historical events: the Palio dei Terzieri.

This is not a staged performance for tourists. It is a deeply rooted local tradition that brings the entire town together, offering visitors a rare glimpse into Tuscany’s medieval past.

What is the Palio dei Terzieri?

The Palio dei Terzieri celebrates the medieval division of Massa Marittima into three historic districts, known as Terzieri:

  • Cittanuova

  • Borgo

  • Cittavecchia

These districts compete in a traditional archery contest based on 13th-century statutes, recreating the spirit of rivalry and civic pride that once defined daily life in medieval Tuscany.

The Festival Atmosphere

For several days, Massa Marittima’s beautifully preserved historic center is transformed:

  • Locals dress in carefully researched medieval costumes

  • Flags and banners decorate streets and piazzas

  • Drummers, musicians, and flag throwers perform throughout the town

  • Traditional food stalls and artisan stands appear alongside historic buildings

The highlight is the grand historical procession, where hundreds of participants parade through the streets before the competition begins.

The Archery Competition

The final event takes place in Piazza Garibaldi, set against the dramatic backdrop of the cathedral. Each Terziere selects its best archers to compete for the Palio banner, while locals passionately support their district.

Even for first-time visitors, the atmosphere is electric. The competition is intense, emotional, and deeply symbolic for the town.
